School budget cuts affect personnel
LE CENTER—The Le Center Board of Education put five teachers on un-requested leave of absences; three non-tenured teachers were terminated; and 14 para-professionals were let go at the April school board meeting.

“This is something we have to do if a teachers contract is being changed in any way,” said co-superintendent Deb Dwyer. “Some of these teachers will be brought back, however, their job or number of classes they teach may change.”

Title 1 teachers Jenny Wallskog and Sara Biermaier along with fourth grade teacher Brooke McGuire were the non-tenured staff terminated.

Wallskog serves the district as a full-time Title 1 teacher while Biermaier is 1/2 Title 1 and 1/2 kindergarten.

“We just don’t know at this time how much, if any money will be received to help fund the Title 1 programs in our district,” said Dwyer. “When we find out, then these teachers can re-apply for whatever positions we have open.”

Full-time teachers put on un-requested leaves include Kindergarten teacher Beth Chadderdon, second grade teacher Kristan Schlingman, Early Childhood/Special Education teacher Allison Hirsch, Phy-ed teacher Phil Campbell and Science teacher Dion Bolton.

The board also approved a three year leave of absence for Special Education teacher Mary Mogensen.

“Ms. Mogensen has been with the district for 21 years,” said Dwyer. “She wants to take a three year leave at which time she would be qualify for Rule of 90 and retirement.”

“What is the dollar savings for the district?” asked board member Rusty Tiede.

“Over the course of the three years the leave would save the district around $45,926,” answered co-superintendent Matt Helgerson.

The resignation of Carol Connolly was also accepted by the board at the April meeting.

“Carol has served our school district for 43 years,” said Helgerson. “We will be combining her position as the District Administrative Assistant with the Community Education position. This position would be 34 hours a week during the school year and 16 hours a week during the summer months.”

Other items under the resolution to discontinue and reduce educational programs and positions would be a custodial positions reduction and moving the CIA duties to Mr. Mathison.

It is an irony that in one issue of the Leader we can read about staff/educator cut backs, AND the hiring of sports related staff. Now, I don't know all the facts or the numbers, but it seems to me that if you can not afford to keep the educators, then you can't afford to hire more staff...regardless of what they are hired for. I see that these new hires are
"assistant" positions which tells me that there are already people getting paid as " head" coach. Why is there money for sports programs and not curriculum ?
Regarding the bus garage....I don't know what it costs to bring in fill, run electric service, and install security cameras there...but here it is SPENDY! Surely the cost of fixing the roof on the garage is less or comparable to the new proposal. It makes sense to me that if your going to spend the money, you might as well have a building when you are done.
Just my thoughts.
